Dieting is one of those things people don’t like to do. It’s hard, it’s stressful, it has an extremely high rate of failure. Bits of diet advice litter the Internet, and just about everyone will have a technique that they think will help you in some way. I have heard a lot of advice and here are some tips I actually found useful. I would love to hear your tips in the comments, too!

  1. Measure something, anything, and it will help you lose weight. Weigh yourself daily, take photos of yourself in your underwear, measure your waist, thighs, arms, stomach and keep track of it all. The best thing to measure would be body fat percentage, but that might be a bit excessive for most of us, as it requires special equipment.

You should also keep track of what you eat. Studies have shown that keeping a food journal helps you lose weight. Writing down everything you eat makes you accountable for everything you eat. So if you unintentionally eat something that blows your diet, you have a record of it. This also allows you to make adjustments to your diet if it isn’t being as effective as you would like it to be. A very complete online food diary is My Food Diary, it helps you keep track of just about anything related to your diet.

  2. Don’t just diet to “be healthier,” set a goal and strive towards it. Reward yourself for reaching it and then set a new goal. Goals should be small, yet progressive, so that you feel like you are accomplishing something. They should also be measurable. Pair this with the tracking tip above for even better results.

  3. I’ve said this before, you should cheat on your diet. Set aside one day a week to satisfy each and every craving you’ve had. Again keep track of what you have been craving and eat everything you have on your list. Engorge yourself, make it so you won’t want those candy bars again for at least a week. This benefits you more than just preventing you from spoiling your diet. Cheating also resets your metabolic baseline allowing you to lose more. Make sure that anything that you bought is fully consumed or leaves your house before the cheat day is over. If the temptation is there, you will probably succumb to it.
