4 Lesser Known Natural Remedies

This time of year, I am inundated by catalogs—need to get off the lists—anyway, I was looking through one and came upon two pages of natural remedies and “Easy-To-Take Supplements”.  My interests were piqued.  I chose a few of the natural “remedies” and checked the out on my favorite internet sites.

Elderberries

Did you know that elderberry syrup can help “ward off the flu and viruses” ?  On herbwisdom.com, I found that elderberries have been used a long time as a folk remedy.  The elderberry was used for and is again being used “for its antioxidant activity, to lower cholesterol, improve vision, boost the immune system, improve heart health and for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsillitis”.  Wow!  The flavonoids in elderberries plus tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitamin A and B and a large amount of vitamin C are why elderberries are used for all of the above mentioned remedies. “ In Israel, Hasassah’s Oncology Lab has determined that elderberry stimulates the body’s immune system and they are treating cancer and AIDS patients with it.”

The Kola Nut

The second remedy is cola syrup.  This syrup is made with 100% cane sugar.  Cola syrup is used for stomach distress and nausea.  There are some claims that it supports the kidneys and bladder.  This is not recommended for people on restricted sugar diets.

Fig Fruit

Figs syrup is a more natural syrup.  Fig syrup is high in fiber, is high in calcium, potassium and magnesium.  Figs are low in fat, sodium and cholesterol, have the highest overall mineral content of all common fruits, are very high in fiber, a high quality of polyphenol antioxidants and lately have been found to contain Omega-3 and Omega-6.  Fig syrup can be a natural sweetener instead of using those chemically made artificial sweeteners, sucrose or corn syrup.  After looking at fig syrup, I looked up figs and found the figs wonder.  Figs are:  good for lowering high blood pressure, a sweet way to lose weight, protective against postmenopausal breast cancer, an insulin-lowering leaf in diabetes, bone density promoter, help in cardiovascular effects, and protection against macular degeneration.

Black Cherries

The last wonderful discovery in the catalog is Black Cherry juice.  Black cherry juice is most used for treatment of arthritis and gout.  Some proponents also say that black cherry juice can fight exercise-induced muscle damage.  There has not been much research done specifically on the benefits of black cherries.  There are studies that have been published that show that anthocyanins may prevent high blood pressure, play an important role in promotion of health, obesity prevention, cardiovascular health and anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.

I am glad I took the time research a little after reading the catalog.  I have been wanting to be of so many man made remedies when there are natural remedies.

About Marilyn

I am a "retired senior" (I've been a school librarian and library tech for a government research facility) who is now pursuing a dream of a home business sewing bags of all sorts, crafting and being the creative person I have always wanted to be. I grew up in the center of Illinois and dreamed of actually living back in the state of Colorado where I was born and lived till the age of 7. That dream came true when I met my husband of 43 years while working together in Estes Park. I am interested in alternative medicine, continuing the good health I've always had, while returning to the pre-processed food era of: eating well, losing weight, and using products that do not harm the environment, me, my family and friends. I am for labeling GMO’s, using sustainable products, organics and finding solutions to everyday problems, like colds and sore muscles, using natural remedies. I have a positive attitude that has helped through a very hard year and will bring forth a life that will be full and happy. My family is wonderful and I am a happy lady, wife, mother, and grandma.
