Are Your Chicken Breasts Augmented?

Last night we were enjoying one of Rachel Ray’s recipes, chicken breasts stuffed with spinach and ricotta mix and wrapped in prosciutto.  Our chicken breasts were very big and we were laughing about what we really were eating.  We’ve had the wonderful organic, locally grown chicken which was a third of the size of the chicken breasts we were eating.  Today when I was thinking about my article, I was reading several posts by Honeycolony.  They had one this week about fake honey, soy sauce and flavoring which was number 6 in the Cracked article by Pauli Poisuo, 6 Creepiest Lies the Food Industry Is Feeding You.  I found out that ”plumping” of chicken has gone on for a long time.  Here is the excerpt:

“For decades, the vast majority of our “fresh” chicken has been infused with a whole bunch of other substances, up to and including beef and pork waste. That’s bad news for Hindus, Muslims and anyone else who is choosing the chicken dish from the menu because contact with beef or pork is expressly forbidden by their religion.

But even when the chicken is untainted by cloven-hoofed contaminants, you’re still likely eating a bird that’s pumped full of chicken stock, brine and “flavor enhancers.” It’s called plumping, and it’s been standard practice in chicken production since around the ’70s. The industry explains that it’s to add juiciness to chicken that would otherwise be too lean and chewy. Sure, they neglect to mention the fact that the chicken is stringy and inferior because they’ve deliberately bred it to be faster and cheaper to manufacture, but at least they’re not technically lying, at least not at this point.”

It does make one wonder, becoming more aware of all the food fraud, if there is any safe and real food.  I know I exaggerate, but we need to become aware of how much of our food has been hijacked by food processers, corporations and grocery stores that are playing with our health. Then, we are pushed into needing medicines to cure us run by the health care industry and pharmaceuticals.  All about money and not a care in the world about how it affects consumers.
