Bugs Beware!

Now that we are in full blown summer, the mosquitoes, biting flies and other blood sucking bugs are in heaven with all the skin we are showing.  A free meal for them and itchiness for us.  Not only do we have to worry about the bugs but we have worry about how the bug spray on the market will affect us.  For many years, we have known that bug sprays containing DEET are bad for us yet the companies that make these sprays have yet to give us a good alternative.

To prove my point here are SOME of the side effects of DEET usage.

Persons who use very high concentrations of DEET on their skin over a long period of time (such as military personnel or game wardens) may have more severe skin reactions that include blistering, burning, and permanent scars of the skin. Other symptoms associated with long-term use of high amounts of DEET (over 50% concentration) include insomnia and mood changes.

By far, the most serious and devastating complication of large DEET poisonings is neurological damage. Patients may have disorientation, clumsiness when walking, seizures, or coma. Death is possible in these cases.

I was at a party the other night and one of the guests had a bug spray that she developed.  It smelled wonderful and bonus, kept the mosquitoes at bay; even on my dog!  I got to thinking that there were most definitely natural ways to keep the mosquitoes and other biting bugs away.  Here is what I found:

  1. Fill spray bottle (I used 8 ounce) 1/2 full with distilled or boiled water

  2. Add witch hazel to fill almost to the top

  3. Add 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin if using

  4. Add 30-50 drops of essential oils to desired scent. The more oils you use, the stronger the spray will be. My personal favorite mix is: Rosemary, Clove, Cajeput, Lavender, Cinnamon and Eucalyptus… it works great and smells good too!

This and other natural bug sprays are easy to make and relatively inexpensive.  They work on adults, children and our pets!  I encourage you to look through your pantry, go to your health food store or supplement store and think outside the commercial, corporate driven box.  I think you will be surprised that the bugs dislike natural alternatives as much as the chemical ones and your body will thank you!

About Felicia

Hello, I am Felicia and I am one of the founding members of Health Now, Wealth Forever. When we came up with the concept of starting our family business, I was enthusiastic just to spend time working on a project with my family. But, as we have grown and expanded, my passion for educating myself and others - about alternative health options and changing the way we view finances and life - has taken over. While I admit I am not the healthiest of our group, I am working on it daily and hope that the articles I write help you to work on it with me. Thank you for supporting us and allowing us to open our minds and yours to an alternative way of look at health, wealth and life!
