Flax Seed and Flax Seed Oil

I was at Natural Grocers, searching for something to help relieve my dry itchy skin and the clerk recommended I start taking flax seed oil capsules. I haven’t found total relief from itchy skin – I still have problems on my back – but I have found that the rest of my skin is much better. I went to the internet to see if the flax seed oil is supposed to help.

I found mixed reviews. The Mayo Clinic and WebMD did not recommend taking flax seeds or flax seed oil this is, in my opinion, because it is not an approved FDA medicine. I have stated before, how sad it is that the medical community cannot recommend anything that is natural.  They would rather us use artificial and sometimes toxic chemicals to make us healthy. There are no studies to back up the use and benefits of taking flax seed and flax seed oil because there are no  monetary benefits of doing the studies.

Flax seeds and flax seed oil are a good source of omega-3 fatty acid and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Omega-3 fatty acid is essential for the body and the body does not produce this compound on its own. Flax seeds are also a rich source of lignans, a specialized type of fiber which is an antioxidant that may help prevent breast cancer.

Taking flax seeds or flax seed oil may help with your dry skin, hair, and nails. It has been shown, though not conclusive to the medical community, to lower both cholesterol and blood pressure, fight colon, prostate, breast, and skin cancers. It may also help with increased stamina, production of energy, decreasing the time of healing sprains and bruises, help stimulate brown fat cells and increase the metabolic rate making it easier to burn fat and helping with weight loss.

Flaxseed and its oil have become a staple for people concerned about their health.  I will continue to use it.

About Marilyn

I am a "retired senior" (I've been a school librarian and library tech for a government research facility) who is now pursuing a dream of a home business sewing bags of all sorts, crafting and being the creative person I have always wanted to be. I grew up in the center of Illinois and dreamed of actually living back in the state of Colorado where I was born and lived till the age of 7. That dream came true when I met my husband of 43 years while working together in Estes Park. I am interested in alternative medicine, continuing the good health I've always had, while returning to the pre-processed food era of: eating well, losing weight, and using products that do not harm the environment, me, my family and friends. I am for labeling GMO’s, using sustainable products, organics and finding solutions to everyday problems, like colds and sore muscles, using natural remedies. I have a positive attitude that has helped through a very hard year and will bring forth a life that will be full and happy. My family is wonderful and I am a happy lady, wife, mother, and grandma.
