If “E” is for Endive and “F” is for Flaxseed then

“G” is for Ginger.

What benefit do you get when you use ginger in your meals?  Well, the health benefits of adding ginger to you diet is surprisingly significant.

I went to several web sites to see what health benefits are normally found in ginger.  Now – if you haven’t used ginger in your day-to-day routine, you are missing out on a very simple way of improving your life without pills and prescriptive medicine. When you use it once, you will continue to use it again and again.  There are other foods that can be substituted for ginger, providing your body nearly the same benefits.  But for now, let’s take a look at the “health benefits of using ginger”.

What is ginger?

Wikipedia says that “Ginger or ginger root is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale, consumed as a delicacy, medicine, or spice. It lends its name to its genus and family. Other notable members of this plant family are turmeric, cardamom, and galangal.”

 Webster’s dictionary says:

  • “a thickened pungent aromatic rhizome that is used as a spice and sometimes medicinally
  • the spice usually prepared by drying and grinding ginger
  • any of a genus (Zingiber of the family Zingiberaceae, the ginger family) of herbs with pungent aromatic rhizomes; especially : a widely cultivated tropical herb (Z. officinale) that supplies most commercial ginger”

At any rate we can definitely say that ginger is a very unusual, distinctive looking root that carries in its weird shape some of the most powerful health benefits we can find.

Ginger is a Powerful Cancer Fighter

Ginger is beneficial to treat and prevent common illnesses, but the most important benefit cannot be disregarded.  Ginger has been known to help treat for years ovarian cancer. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found out through their research that ginger can also destroy ovarian cancer cells.

“In multiple ovarian cancer cell lines, we found that ginger induced cell death at a similar or better rate than the platinum-based chemotherapy drugs typically used to treat ovarian cancer,” says Jennifer Rhode, M.D., a gynecologic oncology fellow at the U-M Medical School.

Other Cancers that Ginger helps fight:

Studies done by researchers at Georgia State University have shown that ginger extract actually stops prostate cancer cells from growing and convinces the prostate cancer cells to kill themselves.  A 60% tumor regression was caused by consuming only 3.5 ounces of ginger extract per day.

Studies done by researchers at the University of Minnesota have shown that the main active compound in ginger, gingerol, significantly slowed the rate of cancer cell growth in mice.  They are performing more tests with the hope of developing a gingerol drug.
