What Dr. Oz says must be true right? I realize I am taking my own life into my hands by making that sarcastic statement but here I go…

In 2012, Dr. Oz came out and said  “You may think that magic is make believe, but this little bean has scientist saying they found the magic weight loss cure for every body type. It’s green coffee beans and when turned into a supplement, this miracle pill can burn fat fast, for anyone that wants to lose weight. This is very exciting and it’s breaking news.” (1)

Sounds amazing! Losing weight while still eating crappy and sitting on the couch? I am in… wait why am I experiencing severe diarrhea, a racing heart (high blood pressure)and horrible gas?(4)  I can tell you there is nothing magic about gas.  I decided to do a bit more research and see what others besides Dr. Oz had to say.

“Just type “green coffee bean extract” into an Internet search and you’ll be inundated with companies advertising its ability to help you lose weight. Look a little closer and you’ll see that many of those sites reference one particular study to back up their claims. That study, published in the journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, was conducted on eight men and eight women.” (2) The study was only conducted with 16 people?  According to Cynthia Sass,”Honestly, the evidence is pretty scant. One 2012 study made a big splash when it found that subjects who consumed 1,050-mg and 700-mg doses lost about 16 pounds in six weeks compared to a placebo group. However, the study was criticized because it involved such a small number of subjects—only 16—and it was funded by a green coffee bean extract manufacturer. An independent analysis of three randomized clinical trials that included a total of 142 participants concluded that the effect of green coffee extract is only moderate at best, and the studies were poorly conducted.” (3)

I  read the comments on several websites that were advertising green coffee bean extract.  Most of them were describing the side effects and not one of them was pleasant.  The hype about green coffee bean extract reminds me of the commercials for Hydroxycut and other miracle weight loss products like that, bottom line is do your own research. Don’t be swayed by the media and the hype, in general there are no miracles in weight loss that last for the rest of your life.  Pay attention to the comments on the websites, those people are usually the experts.  And last but not least, eat food that gives your body energy and doesn’t turn into fat.  Supplements are not a replacement for food.
