Too Many Benefits to List – Kefir may be the Best Probiotic

Has anyone tried kimchi, yet? If not, that’s okay, it’s not the most accessible food. I have something else for you to try to boost your digestive system: Kefir. It’s a yogurt-like beverage, similar in taste and that it’s usually made from dairy products. But it’s better than yogurt in at least a few ways:

  • Super-Probiotic: Some studies have shown that kefir has 5 times the probiotic bacteria population of yogurt. Not only are there more probiotics in kefir, the bacteria in kefir is more diverse. Yogurt usually only has a few strains of bacteria, while kefir has 10 to 20! These include yeast, which makes kefir slightly fizzy and occasionally slightly alcoholic, and a bacteria that produces enzymes that help lactose intolerant people break down lactose.

  • No Dairy Required: I’m sure there’s soy yogurt and maybe almond milk and coconut milk yogurt. But, from what I understand kefir can actually be made of any liquid, like juice or water, as long as you give it a sugar to consume.

  • Low-Sugar: Most yogurt in the market is sweetened (naturally or otherwise). This can be a problem for a lot of people who really need a probiotic boost. Kefir on the other hand is pretty tasty all on its own or with a few berries added in.

Where to start

Buy some at the store: I like Lifeway Organic Whole Milk Plain as an introduction. I believe that fat is good for you, but if you hold another belief look for the low fat variety.

If you are lactose intolerant, and you would like to reduce the chances of pain, look for a goat milk variety like Redwood Hill Farm.

Kefir Grains

Nope, that’s not cauliflower, those are kefir grains.

If you decide you like it, make your own! It’s easy and fast. Get your starter kit here.
