Melatonin

File:Melatonin2.svgA few questions to ask yourself; do you have trouble falling asleep? Do you have trouble staying asleep?  Do you find yourself taking a lot of over the counter sleep aids?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, Melatonin may be the supplement for you.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain.  It is the hormone that tells us when we are tired and when we need to wake by the amounts the pineal gland produces.  The amount the pineal gland produces is affected mainly by light and age.  The less light we get, the more it produces causing seasonal depression or fatigue, the more light we get the less it produces causing sleep disorders and the older we get, the less the pineal gland produces.(1&2)

Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant that protects the lipids and proteins in our bodies, following along the same lines, the less we produce, the less protection we have.  When we get older the less melatonin is produced leaving our bodies open to infection and disease, so taking Melatonin supplements can help you us sleep and protect ourselves from the free radicals that attempt to destroy the lipids and proteins. There are side effects to taking too much Melatonin so do your research and check with your physician if you are concerned but a natural way to sleep better and protect your body?  I am in!
