Nutrition’s Role in Memory and Focus

This week my husband and I were discussing how he seems to have a hard time maintaining focus at work.  Dealing with memory issues and focus issues can add stress, causing more memory and focus issues.  I decided to look into supplements and foods that could him and in turn, help us maintain focus and maintain our memories.

Omega 3 fatty acids are a key supplement in brain function.  We have talked about omega 3 fatty acids in many of our posts, It’s Time to Switch to Krill Oil, I Grew Up in Colorado, Why Should I Eat Fish? and “Chi-Chi-Chi-Chia” Seeds are Good for You.  Omega 3 fatty acids protect the brain from inflammation and high cholesterol. Antioxidants again have been discussed at length at Health Now Wealth Forever but to reiterate, free radicals can impair the brain function by attacking and oxidizing brain neurons.  This causes loss of focus and memory loss. (1)

Dark leafy vegetables, like kale, are packed with antioxidants.

B Vitamins protect the brain’s cells by breaking down homocysteine, an amino acid that is a toxic poison to nerve cells.  B vitamins are crucial to brain health.

Foods that can aid in brain function in addition to the above supplements are dark leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, blueberries, eggs and sunflower seeds. The dark leafy vegetables are high in B vitamins and the citrus and blueberries are powerful antioxidants.  The egg is packed with choline, a nutrient that boosts the brain’s ability to communicate commands to the rest of the body and choline protects the brain cell membranes. Supplements and whole foods can not only do amazing things for your body as a whole but can improve your brain especially!

About Felicia

Hello, I am Felicia and I am one of the founding members of Health Now, Wealth Forever. When we came up with the concept of starting our family business, I was enthusiastic just to spend time working on a project with my family. But, as we have grown and expanded, my passion for educating myself and others - about alternative health options and changing the way we view finances and life - has taken over. While I admit I am not the healthiest of our group, I am working on it daily and hope that the articles I write help you to work on it with me. Thank you for supporting us and allowing us to open our minds and yours to an alternative way of look at health, wealth and life!
