I was challenged after our HNWF meeting about the science proving GMO’s being bad for us. I am very much for GMO labeling, so I have a choice whether I choose the GMO product or not. I worked in a science oriented library for 10 years, so feel I have a little insight into research and science. I feel that there is enough evidence to let us know that GMOs are not very good for us. Many European countries, Japan, India and others ban GMO’s. Why do they protect their people and we do not? Is it the control of our government by the corporations that have created these GMOs?
I have found two great places that are presenting the risks of GMOs. They are supported by references. They are pretty long so I do not want to put here. A few highlights though from 65 Health Risks of GM Foods and The State of Science On the Health Risks of GM Food.
65 Health Risks of GM Foods
A summary of the 65 Health Risks Presented in Genetic Roulette, by Jeffrey Smith
Part 1: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods
Section 1: Evidence of reactions in animals and humans
Section 2: Gene insertion disrupts the DNA and can create unpredictable health problems
Section 3: The protein produced by the inserted gene may create problems
Section 4: The foreign protein may be different than what is intended
Section 5: Transfer of genes to gut bacteria, internal organs, or viruses
Section 6: GM crops may increase environmental toxins & bioaccumulate toxins in the food chain
Section 7: Other types of GM foods carry risks
Section 8: Risks are greater for children and newborns
This is a summary of what is found under the sections.
1.2 Rats fed GM tomatoes got bleeding stomachs, several died
1. Rats were fed the GM FlavrSavr tomato for 28 days.
2. Seven of 20 rats developed stomach lesions (bleeding stomachs); another 7 of 40 died within two weeks and were replaced in the study.
3. The tomato was approved despite unresolved safety questions by FDA scientists.”

“Everyone eats; everyone is affected. The increase in several diseases in North America may be due to the profound changes in our diet. The most radical change occurred a little over a decade ago when genetically modified (GM)crops were introduced. Their influence on health has been largely ignored, but recent studies show serious problems. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been linked to thousands of toxic or allergic-type reactions, thousands of sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals.1 Nearly every independent animal feeding safety study shows adverse or unexplained effects.”
“Herbicide tolerant soy, corn, cotton, and canola plants are engineered with bacterial genes that allow them to survive otherwise deadly doses of herbicides.
This gives farmers more flexibility in weeding and gives the GM seed company lots more profit.”
