The food additive and preservative TBHQ has more in common with lighter fluid than it does with our food. Its name is actually tertiary butylhydroquinon and is derived from butane. Is greatly enhances the shelf life of food and is supposedly a powerful antioxidant. As well as its uses in food and is in varnishes, lacquers, resins and oil field additives, all of which are highly poisonous and warn you not to ingest them.
The current limit for TBHQ in food is 1 gram per kilogram in fish products can make up 0.02% of oil content in foods, and which makes one wonder why they limit a “harmless additive”. At higher doses lab animals have shown cancerous precursors in the stomach and damage to DNA. In lab tests it has also proven carcinogenic to stomach tumors. It is also believed to impact asthma, heart conditions and blood pressure and estrogen levels in women, all of which negatively.
