Prolific author E. L. Doctorow said this about writing novels: “It’s like driving a car at night. You never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” It applies to more than just writing… it applies to just about everything.

Some people are obsessed with planning. If they can’t nail down every step in a project they can’t take the first step. If they can’t see what’s a mile ahead of them they can’t move forward. They have “analysis paralysis.” It is hard for them let go and cross bridges when they come to them. They don’t want to be unprepared. But, life is about surprises. It’s about the unexpected. As John Lennon said, “Life’s what happens while you’re making other plans.”

What you should realize is that you are strong enough, fast enough, and creative enough to handle the bumps and wrong turns that will come while you drive at night. You know your destination is at the end of this road and that if you just pay attention to what is directly in front of you, you will reach it at just the right time.
