Hope ??

Hope is something of an enigma to me.  Not the hope that “a friend will come out and play with me today”, but the deep down hope that other people wish for you to guide you through a dark and terrible life situation.

Is hope there to keep us from despair?  Is it there to spur us to a goal?  Is it there to bolster our belief system? When does hope occur?  Why does hope occur?

There is a scripture in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13:13 that says: “And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, …”.  Is this chronological?  Do you start with faith and obtain hope to be able to receive or give charity?

There are a plethora of quotes on the concept of hope.  Some extol its properties while others criticize its use.  All seem to acknowledge its existence but disagree on its effectiveness and/or its benefits.

In the 7 Stages of Grief… it is not until the 7th and final stage that acceptance and hope occur.  Why doesn’t hope occur at the beginning?  That would seem to be more helpful when going through this process.

Having experienced serious bouts of depression, I can tell you first hand that Hope is impossible to generate when you are depressed.  It only comes toward the end of the depression.  I can also say that Hope is a welcome relief to the despair experienced.

I don’t have any answers to the questions about Hope.  All I know is that it does exist and it is a Gift when it occurs.
